Alpine Grevillea  Grevillea australis

3/14/2024

Picture
Grevillea australis is Tasmania's only grevillea, but we only need one, as it's a stand out shrub. This beautiful small shrub is covered in perfumed creamy white flowers in spring. Alpine Grevillea attracts bees for honey production, butterflies and honey loving birds. It grows naturally in a variety of positions, including snow, river banks and dry harsh conditions.

One of the places this Grevillea grows is along the banks of the St Paul's River. River banks can be wet and inundated with flood waters but also extremely dry for extended periods of time, especially over the summer months. This makes it an ideal plant for gardens, as it will not only tolerate wet periods but also long dry spells, and severe frosts.  If you garden by neglect, and have a difficult site, this is a good plant for you.

Alpine Grevillea grows to 1 - 1.5m high and 0.5 - 1m wide, in full sun or part shade, and thrives in a variety of soils from sand to clay. When planting, keep it watered until established. Alpine Grevillea has a long flowering period sometimes from winter to early summer but flowering is best in spring, especially with added water. Prune back after flowering to maintain a good shape.

Alpine Grevillea is a beautiful addition to any garden or container, the perfect honey plant for you.
