Bulbine Leek tastes a little bit like a spring onion, but different!. The leaves can be chopped up finely ,just as you would a spring onion, and use as a garnish in salads and soups or to add flavour to omelettes or savoury dishes. The bulb can also be used in cooking. This needs to be washed thoroughly to remove or traces of dirt and scraped gently with a sharp knife or use a coarse vegetable brush. It has a beautiful nutty flavour and can be added to sour cream for your jacket potatoes as a dip.
DESCRIPTION: Bulbine Leek has lush green foliage and produces stunning long flower stalks with yellow starry flowers in spring and summer. The foliage grows to 20cm in height and clumps to 10cm wide.
GROWING CONDITIONS: Likes well drained soils. Will not tolerate wet feet.
FOR BEST RESULTS: This plant grows naturally in dry harsh conditions so under-water rather than over-water. If the plant is not getting enough water the foliage becomes tougher and bluer in colour. The more you pick the flower spikes the more they produce. This is a good plant to have in a pot at the back door- it's attractive and you can pick a few leaves as you need them.
