If you walk into a forest and can smell a divine cinnamon and nutmeg aroma you will know there is Sassafrass. These trees are magnificent and deserve a place in your garden just for the aroma, but also for their flavour.
CULINARY USES: Sassafrass leaves are very aromatic and the fresh or dried leaves can be used for a delicious spice flavouring with nutmeg and cinnamon tones. If you run out of milk for your cup of tea add a Sassafrass leaf instead.
DESCRIPTION: A formal tree with attractive creamy flowers and highly aromatic glossy leaves, with distinctive sawtooth leaves.
GROWING CONDITIONS: Prefers shaded moist situations but is equally at home in a container. Tolerates frost to -8 degrees C
FOR BEST RESULTS: Keep well watered and fertilize in Spring
