Nodding Saltbush Einardia nutans
Description: Nodding Saltbush is a ground cover that is covered in edible small red berries that have a sweet salty taste. The berries are abundant from December through to March and can be eaten straight from the bush, or added to salads or fruit salads. The small arrow shaped leaves can be steamed or fried with garlic and butter. Plants have multiple vine like branches that spread out from the centre of the plants and cover up to 1 metre. in distance. Plants will scramble over logs and branches and produce a wonderful carpet.
Growing Conditions: Nodding Saltbush grows in a variety of soils and will tolerate extreme dry, frost and saline conditions. It does not like wet areas.
For Best Results: Water well until established, then Nodding Saltbush is happy to be left alone.
Planting Ideas: Nodding Saltbush is ideal for steep embankments, under trees or tree plantations.
Fauna: The berries are eagerly sought after by fruit eating birds such as Currawongs
