Bower Spinach Tetragonia implexicoma
Description: Bower Spinach is a delicious native spinach ideal for making into pesto, used as a garnish, eaten raw, stir fried with garlic or used in any of your favourite recipes calling for spinach. This plant produces edible red berries which can also be used as a natural red dye. Bower Spinach will grow up to 2m in width and 30-40 cm high but will scramble up other vegetation if allowed.
Growing Conditions: Bower Spinach grows naturally along coastal areas along beach fronts with salt winds and sand but is equally at home in a vegy garden with added water to keep the new shoots fresh and tender.
For Best Results: Keep pruned and pick often to maintain fresh young shoots
Planting Ideas: Ideal for stabilizing sandy areas, used as a weed suppressant or as a fire retardant plant
Fauna: Provides habitat for skinks and small birds. The flowers attract pollinators , and the berries attract fruit eating birds when ripe.
