When I drive around the suburbs, I notice gardens. To me many of these gardens are fashion statements. The fashion of that era of housing, thus we can gauge the age of the house by the choice of plants, indeed we can age whole suburbs. But who decides on plant fashion? Is it the nursery industry, the landscapers, or the garden magazines.
To me a garden should reflect the owner,. What do they love, what brings them a sense of peace and happiness every time they step into their garden? Do they have a special spot they enjoy, where a chair is strategically placed, to enjoy a cuppa, and a good book. Or a place where children love to play. We are all so different, and personal taste is, well personal, so really no one but the owner can decide what plants should be in their garden.
Gardens are like clothes. We know what we feel good in, what colours suit us and what is a good fit. Gardens are like clothes, wrapping around our homes like a cosy jumper, reflecting our personality, our style, our joy.
People think I only love native gardens, because that's what I like to wrap around me, but that's not true. When i see a garden that oozes love and connection to the owner, reflecting their personality, and not just a fleeting fashion trend, then I love it too. But for me, the most beautiful garden of all, is nature's garden. I can't better that. It's simply the best.
