If you have a dry area in your garden, this is the plant for you. Nodding Saltbush is an attractive hardy ground cover that is covered at this time of year with masses of edible small berries. Nodding Saltbush grows where other plants fail to thrive, under established large trees, dry rocky slopes, drought prone and frosty areas. It forms a welcome low carpet of greenery which is especially appreciated during the summer months. Nodding saltbush grows to about 1 metre wide with many fine branches spreading out from the centre of the plant. It is happy to climb over fallen logs and branches tumbling over itself in its haste to cover the area. These plants have narrow arrow shaped leaves and a strong taproot ensuring its survival when times are tough.
The leaves were boiled and used as a green vegetable by early European settlers. The fruit can be eaten raw straight from the bush, or stewed
